Good
Food Guide 2004"..35 years since the Verdins
first opened the Boathouse and things go from strength
to strength ….a location to saviour .. visitors
have praised the enthusiastic staff, varied menu and value
for money…scallops have been beautifully cooked
and presented…slow roast loin of pork has been described
as falling apart with tenderness and bursting with flavour….The
Verdins have amassed a fine collection of clarets and
have the patience to list them only when they reach their
peak and fairness to do so at reasonable prices. The same
goes for Burgundy and there is good value ..in the rest
of France with well chosen New World contributions."
Harpers and Queen " You could not find a more
romantic setting then this small, rustic, brick and wood
panelled eaterie right by the banks of the river Cherwell.
Mix with a pretty young and well healed University set,
preferably outside on the terrace, to sample inventive
if not always successful, Euro- British combinations,
such as salad of black pudding with delicious crisp bacon
followed by the sea trout on squid pasta. But the real
sensuous pleasure here is the wine list, particularly
strong in Burgundy and California. The more you spend
the better the bargain. "
Tatler: Best Thameside restaurants, Giles Coren
"The Cherwell is really just part of the Thames set
aside for punting and picnicking, so the late great Dame
Iris Murdoch's local counts as "Thameside" for me... feels
like a boathouse, but its lovely to sit outside in the
sun gobble down a fillet of sea trout with lime and watercress
or a salad of pigeon breast with roast beetroot and then
stagger down to the Isis and doze of the sound of college
eights swooshing by. Independent Take a punt or any of
the scores of wines by the glass... Around 20% of the list is available
by the glass and as owner Antony Verdin is half of wine
merchant Morris and Verdin the list is unusually engaging."
Time Out: The Time Out Book of Country Walks "In
laid back terms, few restaurants touch this one, right
on the riverfront. Copious choice and reasonable mark
ups on the wine list draw many wine buffs here, while
others just use the idyllic setting for catching up with
old friends... marinated Goat's cheese was simple, but
all components were spot on: wonderful herbed salad dressing,
perky leaves cheese cooked to a velvet meltdown, tomatoes
roasted to give flavour..." |
